Visual Perception while Running

How what you see affects the routes you take

May 7, 2025

I often wonder about how what I see is affected by the speed at which I am moving. I clearly see more when I am walking or running slowly without having a destination in mind. I think what I see affects the routes I take. What I see is very unlike the map created from bird’s eye view. There are trees, buildings and cars blocking the view. Not to mention hills and road bends. I think the perception from the street level is what makes the route pleasant for walking. This information is not available in the maps we use today. Maps typically give the shortest route because this is an objective metric. While what makes a route enjoyable varies from person to person. It is interesting to explore building such route recommendation service for personal use and tweak it based on your own preferences.
