Looking at Running Shoe Soles

On value of paying attention to details

November 5, 2025

Out of curiosity, I photographed the soles of my well-worn running shoes. I wondered what I could learn from seeing how my feet make contact with the ground that I don’t notice when I run. Interestingly, I found some insights. For example, I knew that I tend to land on my heel, but it surprised me to see that I landed on the outer heel. This also explained the tightness I feel in the outer foot after a long run—I am underpronating or supinating, meaning my foot hits the ground at an angle instead of flat. I also realized that my right foot works harder than my left one. Today’s morning run was enriched with this knowledge; I consciously reminded myself to place my feet flat and work my left leg as much as my right one. It made for a great workout, proving once again how paying attention to details can make a difference.
