There’s something very powerful about running in a new city. Especially after you’ve explored the place you usually run in great detail. This experience invites new perspectives and thinking differently. It’s a learning experience of a different kind from one in the classroom. I think running unfamiliar terrain is an invitation to explore and to wonder. This is a kind of daydreaming; you don’t have any expectations, you run and see what’s out there. Sometimes nothing special is discovered, that’s fine – the idea of ’there’s nothing to see’ is made false by your experience of seeing new places. When I visit a new place, I prepare by making a map of popular running routes but rarely look at it during my runs. I prefer to trust my own sense of direction which often takes me to places rarely visited. The worst you can do is run where everyone else is running; this is rarely the best place. Traveling can truly be mind-opening if that’s what you’re looking for.
