Reading Lao Tzu for the First Time

Thoughts on running and seeing a bigger picture

June 1, 2025

I was reading Lao Tzu for the first time this week. It made a big impression on me. This is the kind of book I wanted to read for a long time. The idea of putting all your effort into something that it becomes ‘not doing’ is very useful in long distance running. Suddenly I realized that there are no good or bad places to run. You make use of whatever you have, and you accept it as it is. Then you can open your mind and begin to see possibilities. Without such attitude your options become more and more narrow until you stop running and exercising altogether because you do not see the way forward. I am guilty of such ignorance as much as anyone else. I take things for granted and walk past opportunities of a lifetime because I do not see them.
