Imagination Play

What do the places look like when nobody is looking?

August 23, 2025

Sometimes I like to imagine how the places I pass by on my runs look when I am not there. I usually run in the mornings. How would this road look in the late morning, midday, late evening? I have no idea because I have not been there at those times. Yet it is fascinating to imagine what it could be like. My sense is that the roads I pass are almost completely deserted in the afternoon heat. Perfect stillness. Not even insects are stirring. That is how I see it. As a runner I get to collect memories and experiences of places in a way that is different from anyone else. I become part of the place I run and strangely enough the place becomes part of me. I spent a lot of time with the maps recently: planning routes, preparing for the long runs. There is a lot of information about any given place. Yet none of it describes what your experience of a place is like when you are running it. I feel like a person looking from the bus window: I can see it, but I cannot understand any of it.
